About Carbon
Things which carbon collects:
Updated 10/4/2007
The Carbon we have chosen for fill is very specialized and unique.
In a nutshell, it is THE carbon choice for collecting precious metals, having a high affinity for
them, while a very light preference for Iron…unlike other carbons. This is a big plus for those
with iron in their water.
If you have EXCESSIVE Iron in your water, we recommend that you send it through a Greensand
Filter first, commonly found at swimming pool suppliers, in sizes to match your anticipated water
flows. This will remove the iron, can be back flushed to remove it, and re-used.
1.    It is important to remember that ORGANIC substances can quickly “blind” the carbon…meaning
reduce it’s effectiveness to collect. Things like algae, dissolved stone and sediments are the biggest
problems.

2.    Metals like Copper, Zinc, Mercury, Silver, Gold, Platinum Group metals and Nickel are readily
adsorbed, and become metal. In this group, the more metal collected, the greater the tendency for it to
collect more and more. This takes place at different places on the carbon, becoming scattered “zones”,
from one particle to another, different metals collecting on that particle.

3.    For Maximum effectiveness, you will want to remove all sediments prior to running through the
carbon, in all cases. This may mean a thorough pre-cleaning, which our
Quantum unit provides, set to
pass through the finest filter bags to remove all traces of sediments first, sometimes with an additional
charge of Diamataceous  Earth .
Coconut shell carbon, because it is comprised of predominantly microporous structures, is a
superior performing product for the removal of chlorine, chlorinated solvents and VOCs.
It is also harder and can stand up to more backwashing than bituminous coal based carbon.
Its drawbacks lie in its higher price and its inability to absorb heavier organics. 12 x 30 Mesh.
